LAND ART PROJECT – MOSCOW

Press release written by Anna Malik-Korolenkova

‘Reflection on the Origin of Man’ is Anton Smit’s first sculpture created in Russia. It embodies the complex harmony of duality that the artist constantly addresses in his work.

The artist’s play with our perception is reflected in his choice of materials and the work with colour and texture. Although Smit typically uses metal, bronze or fibreglass, his works possess a truly ‘earthly’ character – they are in relief, like stone sculptures, colour-correlated with the palette of the surrounding space.

Through compositional rhythm he imbues a strictly defined, static form with the illusion of movement, but does not indicate its direction – either all the parts strive to reunite, or, conversely, the image scales up and expands, while its elements only move further apart. The observer effect is triggered – the silent mask begins to come to life, like a mirror reflecting the emotions and state of the viewer.

About Anton

Throughout his creative career Anton Smit reflects on man – his nature, essence, and spirit; on the connections and relationships between people; on the development from natural humanity to the creative issues of creation. In his sculptural vocabulary of images we find slender nudes, hands, angelic incarnations, gigantic figures both whole and fragmented, anthropomorphic abstract forms and, of course, masks and faces. “I believe that man is a spiritual being undergoing an earthly experience. My work depicts stepping out of the known matrix into the realm of the spirit.”
